Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich, a prominent statesman and military and public figure, was born in 1878. Since 1901, he was a member of the State Council – the highest legislative institution of the Russian Empire.

With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Mikhail Alexandrovich was appointed the Commander of the Caucasian Native Cavalry Division. For the special bravery and courage of equestrians, the division received the unofficial nickname “Wild”. The duke showed himself as a brilliant commander, whose valor and fortitude were admired by officers and equestrians.

On March 2, 1917, Emperor Nicholas II abdicated the throne in favour of his brother, Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich. With the lack of support and no real opportunity to accept supreme power, the Grand Duke placed the decision of whether he was going to reign or not into the hands of an as-yet unconvened “Constituent Assembly”. A year later, in March 1918, Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich was exiled by the Bolsheviks to Perm. On the night of June 13, 1918, he was killed.

Along with the state and military service, Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich performed his public duties.

Like other members of the House of Romanov, he was the chairman, trustee and patron of a number of organizations, including the Emperor Alexander III Electrotechnical Institute and the Imperial Russian Automobile Society. In 1905, after the death of his uncle, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, Mikhail Alexandrovich succeeded him as Chairman of the Emperor Alexander III Imperial Russian Historical Museum and Chairman of the Committee for the Construction of a Monument to Emperor Alexander III in Moscow.

In 2022, a monument to Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich by sculptor Alexei Albertovich Matveev was installed in the park on the Kama embankment.
